Kanguva is a Tamil epic fantasy action movie that was directed by Siva and starred Suriya in the dual role (along with Bobby Deol and Disha Patani, both making their Tamil film debuts) along with supporting roles by Yogi Babu, Kovai Sarala, and K. S. Ravikumar.
The film cuts across two periods of time — in 2024, a Goan bounty hunter, Francis (Suriya) has an unexplainable attraction to a superpowered child named Zeta, and in the year 1070 AD, a warrior-chief Kanguva fights Rome and the merciless rivalry chief Udhiran (Bobby Deol) Bollywood Hungama – both the characters learn to be reincarnations of one another. The film was released internationally on 14 November 2024, in standard, 3D and IMAX versions, after being shifted out of its original Dussehra release date in order to avoid a conflict with Vettaiyan.
It was released in 38 languages, giving it an ambitious international promotion. Running on an unbelievable budget of 300-350 crore, the sixth most expensive Indian film production of all time, it eventually earned a relatively paltry total of 106 crore across the globe, making it a huge box-office bomb.
Kanguva Cast: Overview
Kanguva is an Indian Tamil-language epic fantasy action film, directed by Siruthai Siva and produced by Studio Green, UV Creations under the banners of K. E. Gnanavel Raja, V. Vamsi Krishna Reddy, and Pramod Uppalapati. It is one of the most expensive Indian films costing between 300 crore and 350 crore in production budget. The sheer magnitude of the venture, two sets of timelines, numerous shooting locales and more than 38 languages of release, placed Kanguva as one of the most ambitious Tamil productions in recent times.
The technical crew of the film is also the strongest and the music is composed by the renowned music composer, Devi Sri Prasad, the camera work is done by Vetri Palanisamy, and the editing is done by Nishadh Yusuf. The film was shot in seventeen months in various destinations such as Chennai, Goa, Kerala, Kodaikanal, and Rajahmundry and was eventually completed in January 2024. In April 2023, the title Kanguva was officially confirmed, which caused a huge buzz among the fans of the lead actor, Suriya, who participated in the movie as his 42nd.
The makers however delayed the release to prevent a box-office clash with the Vettaiyan released the same time. The movie was distributed in 38 different languages and digital streaming rights of the movie were sold to Amazon Prime Video in South India and other countries.

The film depends on the dual performance by Suriya. In Kanguva, he depicts a warrior of the tribe and ruler of the island of Perumachi in 1070 AD, who defends his people during the invasion of Romans and the treason of the chief Udhiran. He is portrayed as a sharp and street-scraping bounty hunter based in modern day Goa- Francis Theodore, who is unaware that he is a reincarnated Kanguva. The main antagonist in both the present and past is played by Bobby Deol as Udhiran and Commander Ryan respectively, both of whom turn out to be reincarnations of one another. Disha Patani stars as Angel, a competitor bounty hunter to Francis who has been his girlfriend, and Yogi Babu as Colt 95, the friend who is also a partner.
Plot Summary
The novel Kanguva tells the story in two different time lines which are related to reincarnation. Kanguva (Suriya) is the great chief of Perumachi one of the five islands of an ancient seashore in 1070 AD. Roman forces seeking to capture the region seek the assistance of Kodavan who is a traitor who seeks to betray Kanguva in order to empower himself. When Kanguva finds out about the betrayal, Kodavan is killed by Kanguva and the wife of the dying man begs Kanguva not to kill her son, Poruva. The Romans then join hands with the cruel chief of Arthi, Udhiran (Bobby Deol), to wage an open war against the residents of Kanguva.
Francis Theodore (Suriya) is a bounty hunter in 2024 and he collaborates with Goa Police in order to capture criminals. On his way to become a gangster, Francis meets Zeta, a young boy who has run away out of a secret Russian biological center at the Indian border after undergoing brain enhancement and experiments with superpowers. Francis is mysteriously attached to the child even though they have never met before. Francis turns out to be the reincarnation of Kanguva, Zeta is the reincarnation of Poruva, and the facility commander also known as Ryan (Bobby Deol) is the reincarnation of Udhiran, which preconditions a centuries-old battle.
Box Office Collection
Even with its enormous scale of production and enormous expectations as to its pre-release, Kanguva did not live up to box office expectations and was declared a commercial disaster. The film had earned the film approximately 106 crore all over the world in its theatrical release (excluding the cost of print, publicity and marketing) against an estimated production budget of 300-350 crore (not including the cost of print, publicity and marketing).
The first weekend of the film was encouraging in some of the markets especially in the overseas territories where the Suriya fans are numerous. But the adverse word-of-mouth after its release has a tremendous effect on weekday collections. The movie was not able to get repeat customers because of the fragmented plot and unsatisfactory resolution that made the audience anticipate a follow-up. Kanguva later premiered on Amazon Prime Video on 13 December 2024 in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Hindi, English, Spanish and French.
Reviews and Ratings
Critics generally gave Kanguva a negative review when it was released theatrically, and the audience was split. The movie has a rating of 5.3/10 on IMDb, which indicates its polarising nature. The consensus among the critical is as follows:
Comments: Suriya was highly favoured in both roles due to the dedication and physical prowess in his roles. The period action scenes were placed in 1070 AD and were deemed to be spectacular visually and cinematography was brought out by Vetri Palanisamy as spectacular. The background score required by Devi Sri Prasad was also welcome in enhancing the emotional tones of the story. The VFX department (particularly in the battle scenes of ancient times) was reported to be ambitious by Indian filmmaking standards.
NEGATIVES: The critics cited the unoriginal and trite plot, where the reincarnation idea was considered to be too cliche and underdeveloped. The plot was disrupted by illogical cuts, lack of smooth flow of the story, and confusion of the crucial scenes. The performance of Bobby Deol as the villain was criticised to not be believable and overrated. The general audiences mostly complained about the excessive and unrelenting graphic violence with no emotional reprieve. The choice to leave the movie on a cliffhanger – which obviously pre-destined a sequel – was perceived as the most colossal narrative mistake, and the audience was left angry instead of intrigued.
Rather than remaining silent, Suriya’s wife and old-time actress, Jyotika, came out in support of the film and admitted that every creative activity has its flaws, but criticized what she described as a concerted effort by the movie to be slandered.
Conclusion
Kanguva is a movie of unimaginable grandeur and exasperating implementation. It contained everything of a landmark Tamil blockbuster a popular superstar in a big-concept dual role, spectacular visuals, mass action, and an epic mythology versus modernity storyline. However, the film later failed in its egotistical ambition as a mediocre script, lack of narrative thrust and a disappointing culmination had the film with a colossal 300+ crore investment fail at the movie theatres.
To the admirer of Suriya, Kanguva furnishes the elements of true genius particularly in the scenes of its old warrior-dominated, but they are not numerous enough to support a film which, in other places, is of an intermittent character. Being a commercial operation it is a warning story of what no spectacle without substance can be. It remains to be seen whether or not the proposed sequel will be able to put things back on track and fulfill the promise of a great central idea of Kanguva. The movie is currently a daring yet unfinished installment of the quest of the Tamil film industry to become a pan-India blockbuster.
